MobiPocket Reader fonts

August 10, 2007

The standard font(s) that is included with MobiPocket Reader is poor on the P1i in my opinion. Here is a tip from the E61 Blog to solve the issue-

One thing that has aways bugged me about the MobiPocket reader on Symbian is the default font. Just discovered that you can change it. Here’s how-

  1. Insert your SD card into an SD card reader and create a new folder called ‘Fonts’ in the Resource folder.
  2. Copy some fonts from Windows/Fonts on your PC to this new folder.
  3. Re-insert your SD card into the E61 and turn it off and back on.
  4. In MobiPocket go to settings/fonts and then choose one of your new fonts from the list. Works really well and brings it close to eReader quality.

Free P1i Video Conversion

August 9, 2007

Head on over to Media-Convert and you can convert almost any video format you like online for free. For a P1i you will need to choose ‘3GP’ as the output format and 20 frames per second, Stereo channels, 300kbps seem to produce good results on my P1i. This site also converts many other file types, not just video.

Best way to start is The Smartphones Show 40 which has just been released (full details for download etc. here). “I define my Smartphone ‘Standard’ for 2007 and highlight the Nokia N95, plus a hands-on review of the Windows Mobile flagship, the Toshiba G900 – was it pushed out the door too quickly?” Steve Litchfield has quite rightly pointed out that his show will be viewable without conversion. So, even less hassle to watch a quality bit of tech TV!

Useful P1i keyboard shortcuts

August 9, 2007

Hold the back key to return to your home screen from any application

Hold the back key (when in the home screen) to lock the keys

Hold the volume key (right side of # key) to mute phone or to unmute

Here’s a quicker way to use the UI on the camera mode. press “0″ to access the camera settings menu. press…
1 for frame size
2 for shoot mode
3 for zooming out
4 for auto focus
6 for zooming in
7 for night mode
* for light
# for display (from esato forum)

In java games and possibly apps as well if the game or app uses the numerical keys as a D-pad then the phone should automatically default to this, if not just hit the alt key twice to set it on to the numerical key mode, then it shoud function as a D-pad (also from esato forum)

Inactivity lock and MS Exchange- grrrr!

August 9, 2007

It appears that the inactivity lock can be triggered by installing Activesync Exchange and that you can never turn the bloody thing off! There are two ways around this problem-

The first way comes from the AllAboutSymbian forums- “Anyway, I did manage to disable it on the P990i, not sure if it will work on the M600i, but worth a try I guess.

kill exchange activesync and syncscheduler with SwissManager or SwissManagerPro
disable the lock
fire up exchange activesync

I found that by doing that, exchange activesync would not try to enable it again, maybe because that it remembers setting it to enabled, and leaves it at that only stopping you from disabling it whilst it is running. stays unlocked even after rebooting phone, or should it decide to reboot itself at sit at the pin prompt without warning.”

The second came from Sony Ericsson- “If you have had to manually install it then this can cause problems to the handset and they recommend obtaining the version from this link.”
